selected Projects
In February 2020, Joni wrote and performed Citrine II, a short eight-person play about queer femme rhythm and ritual, at Interplay as part of the Fertile Ground Festival of New Performance in Portland, Oregon.
In November 2019, Joni wrote and performed Citrine I, a short five-person play about queer femme rhythm and ritual, at Holocene as part of Pink Noise in Portland, Oregon.
In September 2019, Joni performed in Mia Habib's ALL - a physical poem of protest at the TBA Festival in Portland, Oregon.
In June 2019, Joni wrote and performed Self Defense, a solo show about neurodivergence that weaves digital collage, found sound, movement, and song with generous, sensual language. Through rhythm and ritual, the work draws a connection between personal narratives and the politics of mental health treatment, including the use of “aversives”, or Graduated Electronic Decelerator (GED) devices, which to this day are used to deliver electric shocks to autistic children. Debuted at the Risk/Reward performance art festival in Portland, Oregon.
In May 2017, Joni began a project of wearing velvet every day for one year. The intention of the project was to immerse in a radically-soft act of self care and nourishment, exploring the concept of the body as home for radical energy and velvet as a token of femininity. Joni cataloged the sensations, exaltations, and moments of reflection on social media, writing about femme witness, rhythm, and ritual along the way. She successfully completed this project in May 2018 and exhibited a live performance piece about the work at Boathouse Experimental Studio in Portland, Oregon in December 2018.
In June 2012, Joni performed as a storyteller for The Mystery Box Show.
In May 2012, Joni was featured in Nail Shot, a Korean lifestyle magazine, and interviewed about social practice, gender, performance, and art.
In December 2011, Joni was selected by Marina Abramovic to perform a motionless two-day live and interactive performance art work at the Museum of Contemporary Art Annual Gala in Los Angeles, California. The experience was formative/transformative in the extreme.
